Take A Minute To Sing Episode 20: Dos and Don’ts for Singers

Take a Minute to Sing Episode 20: List of Dos and Don’ts for Singers

  • Don’t clear your throat. Clearing the throat to hard and too often is bad for the voice. Most people do this to get rid of mucus. That is a temporary solution and is irritating to your vocal cords by rubbing them together. This makes them swell and more mucus is produced to take care of the irritation, so obviously this is on the ‘Do Not’ list.
  • Don’t sing too loud. Pay attention to your voice. Not only is excessive loud volume harmful to your voice, but it creates ear fatigue for the listener.
  • Don’t sing too long. No matter how good your technique, there is a point where you need to rest your voice.
  • Don’t sing too low or too high for too long. It is best to vary your range and not stay too long in the extreme parts of your range. If a song stays in the extreme part too much, consider finding a different key.
  • Don’t sing too breathy for an extended time. It’s fine as a style occasionally, but can be irritating if done too much.
  • Don’t look up at the ceiling or down at the floor unless the character demands it. It is best to sing with the spine aligned long and loose.
  • Don’t try to compete in volume with amplified instruments
  • DO use a monitor when singing in a loud atmosphere.
  • Do plan your songs planning your breath spots
  • Do practice best posture balancing feet under your shoulders
  • Do take lessons from a professional teacher. Probably best to steer clear from your relative who says they used to sing and can show you a few things.
  • Do see a voice doctor, or Otolaryngologist if you are experiencing constant vocal problems.

As always, take a minute to sing every day!
