Take A Minute To Sing Episode 5: Lip Vowels
Episode Five: Lip Vowels
The lip vowels are the vowel sounds that are made by gradually protruding or rounding the lips forward. This is the classical vowel position and should be learned even if you aren’t interested in singing classical music.
Learning each classical vowel position will teach you how to get the most sound
with the least amount of effort. After learning the rules, then you can learn how to break them to sing pop, blues, country, etc.
Here are the main points from the video:
• Start with the “AH” vowel and purse your lips by pulling in the corners of the mouth and rounding the lips forward.
• The first vowel to work on is “AW” which is shaped like a vertical oval.
• Practice singing the work “BALL” on a single note
• Next sing the “OH” vowel by rounding the lips more like a circle
• Practice singing the word “BOAT”
• Don’t forget to prepare the breath support before singing
• The next vowel is “OU” as in the word “BOOK”
• Rehearse singing the word “BOOK”
• Finally practice rounding the lips as you would around a straw to make the “OO” vowel sound.
• Sing the word “BOOT”.
