Take a Minute to Sing Episode 12: The Full Vowel Spectrum

The full vowel spectrum is every vowel sound in English. It starts with the “Ee” vowel and migrates through all the vowels ending with the “Oo” vowel sound. When you stub your toe and say “Yeeow!” you go through most of the vowel sounds in English. The only vowels not part of this exercise are the ones using the tongue to create an “R”, like the words “her”, “girl”, “word” etc.

The vowel is the basis of a beautiful tone. Consonants distinguish the words, but vowels carry the tone (thus the reason to master all the vowels in English).

The first exercise is to begin with the “Ee”, slowly move the mouth in a horizontal position, the jaw dropped in, and moving and opening the mouth towards the “Ah” and then ending by pursing the lips forward ending with the “Oo” vowel sound. Do this on a long single note and repeating by moving up half-steps.

Then take a song like “The Star-Spangled Banner” and sing the melody through without the consonants: “Oh—Ay—Ae—Oo—Ee”.
(Watch how I move my mouth in the video)

Don’t forget to take a minute to sing every day!
